WordPress Media Library Aspect Ratio: See Portrait, Landscape and Square at a Glance

The WordPress Media Library crops every image into a square. Learn how to find an image's aspect ratio, and how to see real proportions on every card.

You are looking for a wide image for a header, or a vertical one for a banner. You open the WordPress Media Library, and every thumbnail looks the same: a square. The shape of the image, which is what you are choosing by, is the one thing the grid hides.

What aspect ratio is

The aspect ratio is the relation between the width and the height of an image. A photo that is 1600 pixels wide and 900 pixels high has a ratio of 16:9. Some ratios you will meet often:

Ratio Shape Typical use
1:1 Square Avatars, product thumbnails, social posts
4:3 Landscape Classic photos, some blog images
3:2 Landscape Camera photos
16:9 Wide landscape Hero sections, video covers
9:16 Tall portrait Stories, vertical banners

Orientation is the simple version of the same fact: portrait, landscape or square.

Why the Media Library grid hides it

The native grid draws square, cropped thumbnails. A tall portrait and a wide panorama occupy the same space, so you cannot tell them apart by sight. The list view does not help either, because it shows the file name and dates, not the dimensions.

The native grid: every image is a square, whatever its real shape.

The native way to find the ratio

  1. Go to Media > Library, in the grid view.
  2. Click the image to open the attachment details.
  3. Read the dimensions, for example 1600 × 900 pixels.
  4. Divide the width by the height: 1600 ÷ 900 is about 1.78, which is 16:9.

It works, but only one image at a time, and it needs a bit of arithmetic.

Why it matters in practice

  • Layouts. A hero section or a card grid expects a shape. An image with a different ratio gets cropped by the theme, and the crop may cut off the subject.
  • Consistency. A row of cards looks tidy when the images share a ratio.
  • Choosing faster. Knowing the shape before you open an image saves clicks when the library has hundreds of files.

See real proportions on every card

The free CICO Media plugin improves the native library instead of replacing it. Each card shows the image in its real proportions, portrait, landscape or square, with the aspect ratio (such as 16:9 or 4:3), the dimensions and the file size. The same cards appear in the Media Picker, when you choose a featured image or an image block.

Portrait, landscape and square, as they really are.

CICO Media does not crop, resize or move your files. It only changes how they are shown.

CICO Media Pro adds an orientation filter next to the other filters (usage, tags, size, type and source), so you can show only the landscape images, for example, when you need one for a header.

The Pro orientation filter: show only portrait, landscape or square images.

In the docs: how cards show proportions in Real proportions and card information, and the orientation filter in Smart Filters.

Summary

  • The native Media Library shows every image as a square, so the real shape is hidden.
  • You can find the ratio by opening each image and dividing width by height.
  • A plugin that shows real proportions on every card saves that work, without touching your files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see an image's aspect ratio in WordPress?

WordPress does not show it. Open the image in the Media Library, read its dimensions in the attachment details, and divide the width by the height. Or use a plugin that shows the ratio on every card.

Why do all images look square in the Media Library grid?

The grid shows cropped square thumbnails. A tall portrait and a wide panorama take the same space, so you cannot judge their proportions by sight.

What is the difference between aspect ratio and orientation?

Orientation says whether an image is portrait, landscape or square. Aspect ratio is the exact relation between width and height, such as 16:9 or 4:3.

Does CICO Media crop or resize my images?

No. CICO Media only changes how images are displayed in the library. Your files are not cropped, resized, renamed or moved.

Can I filter the library by orientation?

Yes, with CICO Media Pro, which adds an orientation filter (portrait, landscape, square) next to usage, tags, size, type and source.
